Submissions to Otago University Press must be the author’s original work. Ideas, structure, argument, characters, plot, imagery, narrative voice and other creative or intellectual elements must originate with the author.
Generative AI tools must not be used to generate or rewrite text for inclusion in a submitted work. Standard spelling, grammar and proofreading tools are acceptable, provided they are used to identify or correct errors rather than to generate or rewrite text.
Where AI has been used as a research tool for non-fiction, authors must independently verify any information obtained against reliable sources and be able to explain how the tool was used.
Before a work can be accepted for publication by Otago University Press, the author will be asked to warrant in writing that it complies with this guidance and to disclose any use of generative AI in its development or production.
If we have questions about the authorship or originality of a submission, we may ask for further information about how the work was developed and created. We therefore recommend that authors retain drafts of works in progress and keep an accurate record of any use of generative AI in relation to the work, including relevant prompts and instructions.
For competitions and prizes, Otago University Press reserves the right to disqualify an entry or withdraw an award if these requirements are not met.
