Welby Ings

Welby Ings is a professor of design at Auckland University of Technology, an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a consultant to international organisations on creativity and learning. An award-winning academic, designer, filmmaker and playwright, he did not learn to read or write until the age of fifteen, was labelled ‘slow’ at school and was eventually expelled. He has taught across all levels of New Zealand’s education system, is an outspoken critic of assessment-driven teaching, and in 2001 received the Prime Minister’s Award for Tertiary Teaching Excellence.
