Michael Shackleton

Michael Shackleton

Michael Shackleton, OBE, (1927-2015) was an innovative general surgeon who in one swoop raised the level of bowel cancer detection in New Zealand. He imported the first colonoscopy apparatus and it was installed in Dunedin. The results were immediately evident and made the existing sigmoidoscopy equipment obsolete. He was awarded the Order of National Merit, South Vietnam, the New Zealand General Service Medial (Vietnam) and the New Zealand Operational Service Medal (Vietnam).
